English 1010 Spring Semester 2012 Candice Brooks April 15, 2012 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for taking the time to review my portfolio. This portfolio has some of my work that I feel best represents my writing skills that I gained at Salt Lake Community College. In English 1010 one of the most important things that I learned was how college level paper should be organized. I learned about attributes such as, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and research. I also learned how to use peer feedback to improve my writing skills and documents. I was able to complete my papers by using the following strategies I gained in English 1010: · Finding peer reviewed journals for more valid research (school database), as well as articles from the media. Looked up articles from the media and used the school database to find peer reviewed journals to back up my information for more valid conclusions. · Annotative bibliography summaries helped me do my research and organize. · Peer response by my group to review before turning the paper in. After learning about these skills my ability has greatly improved. Also hand out examples in class helped me apply these skills to my strong response and other documents. My strong response document shows my progress in developing a strong thesis, and laying out the structure of the argument. In my first draft I was not sure what I wanted my thesis to be, therefore it was unstructured. After more research and help from my research group I was able to come up with a thesis while properly structuring my paper. My strong response paper not only shows my improvement but my ability to work thoroughly on a project. Thanks to English 1010, I’ve been able to apply these different writing techniques in other classes such as, Psy1010 and Human Sexuality 2450. In addition I have applied better structure and organization to my renewed resume. English 1010 is very important for general education due to learned skills that can be used in and out of the classroom. Discovering how my ability to improve my learning has made me very appreciative of the experience. I’ve realize how important it is to take the time to, revise, edit, and review my work in various aspects of my life. This class relates to other classes because the written word is an important concept in order to communicate my ideas appropriately with an audience.
